Before you plug in.
Do I need an SD card for direct transfers?
No. The app sends samples and kits directly to the TR-8S over USB. SD export remains an optional alternative, not a required part of the direct-transfer workflow.
Does the website control my TR-8S?
Yes. Connect the TR-8S over USB, open the live studio in desktop Chrome or Edge and allow MIDI + SysEx. The browser talks directly to your local device; a remote server cannot access your USB port. Keep the page open while sending.
What do I need to get started?
A Roland TR-8S, a USB connection and a desktop browser with Web MIDI SysEx support, such as Chrome or Edge. The TR-8S MIDI ports must be available to your operating system. Match Pattern/Kit MIDI channels and enable the device’s Edit Data and Program Change settings. Browsers without Web MIDI can still load, preview and save local projects.
Can I send samples while the machine is running?
Live step and parameter edits are designed for playback. Sample uploads and full-pattern transfers have separate device checks; stop the TR-8S when requested. Imported MIDI waits for Stop before a full transfer.
How are kits and slot selections saved?
Export .T8K saves the sample kit data to a file on your disk. Save/Open project includes WAV audio, the MIDI pattern, kit/pattern slots and workspace settings in a local .trflow file. Opening a project selects its pattern and kit on the TR-8S. Channel locks protect entire channels from randomization.

Trial limits & requirements
- 5 minutes of connected editing per account. Refreshing the page does not reset the allowance.
- Timer starts after successful connection. Up to 8 sample/kit transfer attempts, with up to 3 minutes excluded per transfer.
- Upload and send your WAV samples in BD, SD, LT, MT and HT (slots 1–5). Slots 6–11 are locked. No project saving, file export or personal MIDI import.
- Choose target Kit/Pattern slots: transferring a demo overwrites their contents.
- When time ends, new edits and transfers stop. An ongoing transfer finishes safely; sounds and patterns stay on the TR-8S.
- Desktop Chrome/Edge, MIDI + SysEx permission and internet access required. Stop the TR-8S before sample transfers.
- Demo kits are synthesized sounds inspired by their styles, not licensed Roland recordings.
